Pre-Apprenticeship Automotive Service Technician + Truck & Coach Mechanic

This first-level apprenticeship program is delivered in a 13-week time frame. In addition to fulfilling the requirements needed to continue in an apprenticeship (pending employer sponsorship), participants will also receive job readiness skills and a paid placement.

HIGHLIGHTS:

• Focus on level 1 Automotive Service Technician, as well as an introduction to a secondary trade in Truck and Coach Technician.
• Training in health and safety, engines, fuel, electrical systems, power trains, steering, suspension and brakes, plus applied shop practice, including safety, welding, air conditioning.
• In shop, practice including a 1-week specialized project with the proper use of use of hand tools, power tools, and lift equipment.
• Additional course content focuses on bearings, seals and sealants, precision measuring tools, oxy-acetylene welding and cutting, and the use of computers for accessing trade-related information.
• Training in diagnostic test equipment; the operation, inspection, and testing of batteries; wiring schematics, and component identification, circuit repair and protection devices; intake and exhaust, emission control, and hybrid systems are also explored.
• Additional skill areas include suspension, steering, and brakes including the fundamentals of tire and wheel repair and servicing according to manufacturers’ recommendations.
• Air brake adjustment and air brake chamber safety are also covered.

ELIGIBILITY:

• Must be unemployed or underemployed
• Must be a Cornwall/SDG/PR/Akwesasne ON resident
• Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
• Must have Gr.12 education or equivalent
